    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Titanium Grade 23 / Ti-6Al-4V ELI (R56401)?

Grade 23 is the extra-low-interstitial variant of Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V - oxygen capped at 0.13%, iron at 0.25% - giving improved fracture toughness and ductility at cryogenic temperatures. Per ASTM F467 for medical implant fasteners and cryogenic-service nut (LNG, liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen).

When choose Grade 23 over Grade 5?

Long-term medical implants (orthopedic, spinal, dental abutments), cryogenic service below -50 F, and any application requiring maximum fracture toughness. Grade 5 (R56400) is the everyday alpha-beta titanium; Grade 23 is the premium variant.

Mechanical properties for Grade 23 ELI bolting?

Annealed: tensile 120 ksi min, yield 110 ksi min, elongation 10% min. Reduced strength vs Grade 5 is the trade for improved toughness. STA condition is available but rarely specified for ELI-grade applications.

    Sour-service acceptance?

Yes - NACE MR0175 lists R56401. Most Grade 23 oilfield demand is cryogenic LNG nut on receiving terminals.
