    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Aluminum 6262 (A96262)?

Aluminum 6262 is the free-machining variant of 6061 with lead + bismuth (~0.4-0.7% each) added for chip-breaking on screw machines. Same Al-Mg-Si chemistry and T6 mechanical properties as 6061 with significantly improved machinability for high-throughput fastener production per ASTM F467.

    When use 6262 over 6061?

When fasteners are produced on automatic screw machines and tight tolerances + clean chip break are critical. 6262 is typically a few percent more expensive than 6061 but pays for itself in higher production throughput. Same corrosion and welding behavior as 6061.

    Is 6262 weldable like 6061?

Less so - the lead + bismuth additions create hot-shortness issues in welding. If the bolted assembly requires welding, specify 6061. If the bolt is mechanically threaded into a separate part, 6262 is the better choice.

    Available dimensional patterns?

Same as 6061 - all F467 ASME B16/B18 inch and metric series.
